The darkness and claustrophobia allow the senses to run wild, to distort reality, and to surface the mind’s worst nightmares. Which is also how I felt when I first read Descending Son by Scott Shepherd. And I mean that in a good way. Descending Son opens with protagonist Jess Stark being pulled from one such trunk and dragged across a desert floor. He is disoriented, struggling to identify landmarks and sounds, frantically searching for faces in the dark. Then a realization hits Jess: returning to Palm Springs was a very bad idea. It’s not a spoiler to say that Scott Shepherd has many surprises for his readers—any good writer does. But Descending Son packs a wallop, on
